These Words Changed My Life

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step
-Lao Tzy

I vividly remember my mentor telling me, “Annie if you want to be average, your life will be average.”

Many of you must have heard or read my story before, where I lost my eyesight for three months, I had facial paralysis towards the end of my pregnancy, and along with that I had poor self-esteem, and no confidence. I was very insecure, and I had no goals at all. I was filled with bitterness, hatred and anger.

But in the midst of all that, I thankfully had a God sent mentor. She kept hearing me complain and say, “I am very average. I’m this and that.” On and on she kept hearing me say that.
And one day she told me, “Annie if you keep telling yourself that you are are average, your life will be average.”

If you plan on staying average, every aspect of your life will be average.
What do you want to do? Do you want your life to be average?
My mentor told me these four words which completely changed my life, “Annie if you don’t want your life to be average, then YOU WORK ON YOURSELF.”
That completely changed my life. At first I was like, “Work on myself? I’ve been praying to God to change my circumstances, and here comes a person telling me to work on yourself? What am I supposed to do?”

Let us time travel to the year 2010. I told myself, “Enough is enough, I am not going to live my life like this.” I am not going to let my children go through this kind of life looking at me, because they needed a role model.
And another thing my mentor told me was, “Annie, right now, don’t look at the needs of your children, don’t look at your husband, don’t look at society, just don’t look anywhere! You are pouring yourself everywhere contributing to others, first work on yourself, and on your life. Do that first, and then everything will fall into place.”

I have a journal from 2010 and there is a page where I wrote on October 12, “It is time to kick up a notch, and be that extraordinary woman.” Because I knew that if I wanted to be a role model to my children, that was my first goal. I wanted to be someone that my children could look up to. So, that was my first goal, to become a role model for my children, and to become an extraordinary woman.
At first I was overwhelmed. What was I supposed to do? I have not done anything over these years, where was I supposed to start?
I wrote down something again, a quote that I had found, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” -Lao Tzu.

I started to work and follow my mentor’s instruction which was ‘You Work On Yourself’. I timed myself, and invested twenty minutes to take a motivational CD, put it in the CD player, press play and listen to it for twenty minutes. I would listen to it while I was folding clothes, cooking, cleaning, basically whatever I was doing, I would carry the CD player everywhere with me (not outside, just around the house).

And twenty after twenty minutes I would keep listening, because I was hungry to learn, to change, to become the woman I wanted to be. I used to time myself and read a book for twenty minutes. And with that investment of reading and listening, I also started exercising. All of this added up in the number of hours of investment that I put into myself.

And now in 2021, I can say as I look back that I have changed. And this was the changed that I had desired. Yes, it took time, but it was worth it.
I started to see a difference not only in me, but in my children as well. They started to follow me, taking up books to read, they started to listen to motivation, they started to have a better mindset. My husband as well started to change, in fact he was also the one who told me, “Annie get out of that victim mindset. Become stronger.” He was the one who believed in me, even before I did in myself. He knew that I could change myself, telling me, “Don’t look at others, look at yourself.”

Let me ask you something. Does your Ipad, Iphone, or laptop, need its usual update? Just as our phones and laptops get updates, so do we.
What about our cars. Don’t we wash it, take it for a checking, clean it inside and out? We make it look good, and shiny.
What about you? Have you been updating yourself? Have you been working on yourself?
How do you start? Well you can start by reading a motivational book.

Time yourself for twenty minutes, if not twenty minutes at least ten minutes.
If you don’t want to read, then go on to YouTube, there is a lot of motivational speakers, podcast that you can listen to.
Sometimes it is not the circumstance which should change, maybe it should be you who should change.
When I changed, my circumstance and my family life changed.
Mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually, my life took a turn for the better. And that was because I was contributing to myself.

If you want to be average, then your life will be average.
So take your pick, average or extraordinary?
Are you going to start?
When are you going to start?
